FLAVOR FACTOR: A

Chef’s Cut Real Jerky Original beef jerky is a great mixture of flavors without being overwhelmingly salty. You’ll get hints of horseradish and Worcestershire sauce to give it a little spice and compliment the smokiness. This is one of our favorite original-style flavors. Because the flavors seemed so balanced with a bit of heat, salt and sugar, we score Chef’s Cut Original beef jerky an A on the flavor factor.

TEXTURE FACTOR: B

They claim you’re getting premium, hand-picked beef cuts in every bag and I believe they deliver on that claim. The jerky pieces were larger than typical, but soft. The jerky was dry and not too oily. If you’re looking for jerky that won’t kill your jaw chewing it, I recommend Chef’s Cut; however, some of the pieces almost seemed too spongy. Since the density wasn’t quite right for us, we score Chef’s Cut Original beef jerky a B on the texture factor.

HEALTH FACTOR: A

Chef’s Cut Real Jerky Original beef jerky is gluten free, nitrite free, MSG free, and uses no artificial preservatives. It doesn’t have the lowest amount of sodium, but at 340mg per serving, it is in line with other major brands. Chef’s Cut jerky products are nutrition-conscious snacks with quality ingredients. We give Chef’s Cut Real Jerky Original beef jerky an A on the Health factor.

FLAVOR FACTOR: A

If you’re looking for a jerky that will spice up your life, Golden Island’s Kung Pao beef jerky is exactly what you want. Initially, biting into it gives you a hint of sweetness; however, it is quickly followed up with spice. With hints of brown sugar and a robust blend of Chilies and Sichuan pepper, the results are a delicious and potent Kung Pao taste. The heat was a bit overwhelming for me at times, but the intensity was true to the Asian-inspired flavor. We score Golden Island’s Kung Pao beef jerky an A on the flavor factor.

TEXTURE FACTOR: B

Because of the way Golden Island kettle cooks their beef in their process, the jerky is tender and soft, but looks unlike most jerky product’s I’ve seen. The meat was moist, but not overly oily. It had very little gristle, but was a bit chewy. Overall, the texture was good, but a little too spongy. We score Golden Island’s Kung Pao beef jerky a B on the texture factor.

HEALTH FACTOR: B

Golden Island’s Kung Pao beef jerky contains all natural ingredients and is gluten free. It also has less sodium that most brands we’ve reviewed. There are no added nitrates, but I don’t see anywhere on the product that it contains no MSG. We score Golden Island’s Kung Pao beef jerky a B on the health factor.

FLAVOR FACTOR: B

Laura’s Lean Original beef jerky has a clean taste with hint of initial sweetness, and then pepper. The added smoke flavor is an afterthought to earthy pepper flavor that comes through as you chew the jerky. The flavor is good, but it doesn’t stand out as spectacular. We score Laura’s Lean Original beef jerky a B on the flavor factor.

TEXTURE FACTOR: B

The jerky looked as advertised and was lean and sliced thin. Although thin, the pieces were dense and fairly dry. It was neither too chewy, nor too tough. I enjoyed the lean, non-gristly texture of the jerky, but since the jerky was a bit dry we score Laura’s Lean Original beef jerky a B on the texture factor.

We give Tillamook Country Smoker’s Honey Glazed an A on the flavor factor.

 FLAVOR FACTOR: B

The jerky tastes fantastic; however, the teriyaki didn’t come through in the way I hoped. It seemed almost southwestern style with possible hints of Poblano pepper, but it isn’t spicy. The teriyaki flavor is more of an after taste to the rich smokiness cooked into the meat; however, the combination of the two is pleasant and prevents the jerky from tasting too salty. Old Trapper Teriyaki beef jerky scores a B on the flavor factor.

TEXTURE FACTOR: A

The jerky looks delicious and lean. The pieces are tender and moist, but not oily. The pieces were not overly chewy. Some were stringy as you tore or chewed, but they were not gristly . Overall, the quality seems great. I would recommend this brand if you do not like tough, chewy jerky. Old Trapper Teriyaki Beef Jerky scores an A on the Texture Factor.

HEALTH FACTOR: C

Neither the package nor the official website says the product is gluten free, MSG free, or nitrates free. The sodium content is also a bit higher than some of the other brands we’ve reviewed. We give Old Trapper Teriyaki Beef Jerky a scores of on the health factor.

Old Trapper Smoked Products is the family owned business, headquartered in Oregon, that makes Old Trapper beef jerky. They claim their beef jerky is the best in the world,  and they have been expanding their business since 1969. Their teriyaki beef jerky is definitely delicious, but I don’t think this particular flavor was bold enough to be the best in my book. The 10oz bag is easily available in stores and online for $15 or less. Combining flavor, cost, and availability, we think Old Trapper beef jerky is a good value and recommend trying it for yourself.

FLAVOR FACTOR: A

Cattleman’s Cut teriyaki beef jerky tastes sweet and a little tangy with hints of garlic. The teriyaki flavor is pronounced well in this brand and tastes great. The smokiness wasn’t overpowering and compliments the teriyaki; however, a smokey flavor kind of lingered in my mouth after eating the jerky. Regardless, because Cattleman’s Cut’s teriyaki stood out to us, we score it an A on the flavor factor.

TEXTURE FACTOR: C

Majority of the jerky was large, moist chunks. Even though it seemed moist, it was chewy and had a lot of gristle making it tough to swallow. Overall, the texture left something to be desired. We score the Cattleman’s Cut teriyaki beef jerky’s a C on the texture factor.
